Because a majority of insects are harmless, this fear is also considered irrational. Entomophobia is very common in urban, city-dwellers because bugs are not something we see everyday. In Hawaii, however, the fear of cockroaches is very prevalent (and rightfully so, they're terrifying).

So many insects are harmless and yet instill so much fear into people; they drop what they're holding, stop what they're doing, scream, and run away at the sight of the smallest of bugs. But, I can't pick on entomophobes too much since I'm alongside them in their fear of cockroaches.
